Greenland needs to stand united after Trump’s statement.

At the same time, the government wants to improve cooperation with NATO countries.

– We should not panic, says Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen at a press conference.

Donald Trump has said that the US ”absolutely needs” Grönland

The country’s government therefore called a press conference on Monday evening – and the message was clear.

– I understand that some are concerned. The situation is not such that the US can conquer Greenland.  Therefore, we should not panic, says Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen at the press conference, according to  BT.

”Strong cooperation”

In a new interview with The Atlantic, Donald Trump said that the US needs Greenland for its defense. He also pointed out that Venezuela may not be the last country to be subjected to an American “intervention”.

But Nielsen reiterated that the US cannot take over Greenland overnight. He repeated several times that he wants to strengthen cooperation with the US and the rest of the NATO countries.

– We need to show that we are united in society, including with our allies, Jens-Frederik Nielsen continues:

– The friendship we have had for many years is under pressure. We cannot accept that. We will try to restore good cooperation with the US, he says.

Right channels

Trump's statement was reported in the American press and Katie Miller, who previously worked for Trump and is married to one of his advisors, posted a picture of an X on Greenland colored like the American flag.

In the post, she wrote "Soon" in capital letters.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called the post "tasteless" and said that the country is not for sale. He was also careful that their future is not determined by posts on social media.

Now he clarifies it even more - the discussions should take place in "right channels".

- Let's use the right channels to talk to each other. The right channels for cooperation have not been used in the past year. We would like to return to that. It benefits all countries, he says.

He also says that Greenland cannot be compared to Venezuela.

- We have a country that is democratic. It has been that way for many, many years, says Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
