The Israeli government continues to refuse to allow international journalists into the Gaza Strip, court documents show.
According to Israeli authorities, the media blockade is necessary for security reasons.
“Even at this time, journalists’ entry into the Gaza Strip without an escort, as requested in the petition, should not be allowed,” the government’s submission states.
Independent journalists have not been allowed into Gaza since the outbreak of war in October 2023. Only a small number of reporters have been allowed to enter together with the Israeli military, then with strict restrictions.
Monday's announcement comes after the country's Supreme Court in December demanded that Israeli authorities submit a plan by January 4 for when journalists will be allowed into Gaza.
This came after The Foreign Press Association (FPA) filed a lawsuit with Israel's Supreme Court in 2024, demanding immediate access to Gaza for reporters and photographers.
The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on the matter, although it is unclear when.
