Obama calls for protests in the US.
In a letter on X, he criticizes Trump.
"This must end".
Former President Barack Obama describes the death of 37-year-old nurse Alex Prettis as a "heartbreaking tragedy".
In a letter on X, he urges the American people to see the murder as a wake-up call.
"Many of our fundamental values as a nation are increasingly under attack".
Obama also criticizes President Donald Trump and his administration.
"Federal law enforcement and immigration agents have a difficult job. But Americans expect them to carry out their duties in a legal and accountable manner".
“Escalating the situation”
He states that ICE agents intimidate, harass and provoke American citizens. Something he believes the top lawyer at the Department of Homeland Security has criticized.
“And yet, instead of trying to impose any kind of discipline and accountability for the agents they have deployed, the president and current administration officials seem eager to escalate the situation.”
Obama writes that the Trump administration has tried to justify the shootings with explanations that contradict video evidence and investigations.
“This must end. I hope that after this latest tragedy, the administration’s representatives will reconsider their approach.”
In closing, Obama calls for peaceful protests.
“Ultimately, it is up to each of us.”
