Trump's USA Votes on ICE

Republican Senator Calls for Investigation: "Troubling"

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy describes the events in Minneapolis as "extremely troubling" and calls for an investigation at both the federal and state levels.

"The credibility of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security is at stake," he writes on X.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, also reacted to X. He calls for the resignation of Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, and for the firing of Border Patrol Commissioner Gregory Bovino.

"Investigate and prosecute every single federal agent who breaks the law," Newsom writes.

Senate Democrats have threatened to cut funding to the Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE, after the shooting. Such a decision could lead to another shutdown of the US government.

Major protests across the US after the shooting

Overnight, major demonstrations against the immigration police ICE took place in several major US cities, after Alex Pretti was shot dead by federal police, reports the BBC.

Thousands of people participated in the protests in cities such as Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Protesters also gathered outside ICE headquarters in the capital, Washington DC, to protest the shooting.

Alex Pretti was shot dead by a federal Border Patrol agent during an ICE operation in Minneapolis on Saturday. The US Department of Homeland Security claims that Pretti posed a danger to the agents and that he pulled a weapon on them.

Several media outlets, including CNN, have analyzed video footage from the scene and unanimously conclude that Pretti did not pull a weapon but had already been disarmed when the shots were fired.

Pretti had the legal right to carry a weapon.

Obama after the shooting: "Should be a wake-up call"

"The murder of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call for every American, regardless of party," writes former US President Barack Obama on X about the shooting in Minneapolis yesterday.

In a lengthy statement, signed by Obama and his wife Michelle, they accuse Donald Trump of escalating the situation instead of demanding accountability from the agents involved.

"These unprecedented methods - which even the former top lawyer at the Department of Homeland Security during the first Trump administration has described as embarrassing, lawless and cruel - have now led to the fatal shootings of two American citizens."

He writes that the situation "must end" and now calls on US residents to question injustice, protect basic freedoms and hold the government accountable.
