Political situation in Iran

Protesters in Iran last night: “Death to Khamenei!”

The protests in Iran have entered their second week and everything indicates that they are growing in scale. In several places, demonstrators are shouting “death to Khamenei”, according to several media outlets.

The slogan can be heard, among other things, in a video from the port city of Bandar Abbas published by the UK-based Iran International. Similar expressions can be heard in a video from Abdanan published on Tuesday evening and verified by the New York Times.

In several places, the demonstrators have been met with violence from the police. Among other things, tear gas was used to disperse people who had gathered at Sina Hospital in central Tehran.

The Shah’s son: Iran is ready for a transition to democracy

The Islamic Republic is coming to an end and Iran is ready for a transition to democracy. This is what Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Shah of Iran, claims in an article in the Washington Post.

“The Islamic regime has never been weaker than it is now. Its response to peaceful protests – mass arrests, executions and repression – is proof that the regime is afraid,” writes Pahlavi.

He adds that he himself could imagine leading Iran during a transitional period.

Pahlavi’s father, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was overthrown by the people during the 1979 revolution.
