European leaders: We and the US agree on guarantees
The US and Europe agree on what security guarantees for Ukraine should look like, says Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre according to Aftenposten.
It is “clear” that the US also wants to contribute to them, he adds. Positive signals are also coming from other European leaders.
– Today we took another step towards more credible security guarantees for Ukraine. That is the major takeaway from today's meeting, says Ulf Kristersson to TV4 Nyheterna.
– The agreement between Europe and the US seems to be secured today, says Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk according to Reuters.
European Council President Antonio Costa says that “a system of politically and legally binding guarantees” is ready to be activated in the event of a ceasefire.
The statements come during the meeting in Paris between the leaders of the 27 countries in the “coalition of the willing.”
Decisive meeting today – draft points to guarantees
The design of security guarantees for Ukraine may be decided during today's summit in Paris, reports TT. The US delegation is to meet around 30 heads of state and government to agree on several details of a peace agreement with Russia.
Ahead of the meeting, top French diplomats have promised some kind of announcement regarding security guarantees and the framework for how the ceasefire will be monitored if it is achieved.
– Concrete details have been promised and therefore I would like to say that this meeting could be decisive, says SVT's Europe correspondent Christoffer Wendick.
A draft statement states that the US will commit to supporting a multinational peacekeeping force in Ukraine to prevent a future Russian attack, reports AFP.
"These commitments could include the use of military capabilities, intelligence and logistical support, diplomatic initiatives and the imposition of additional sanctions," an earlier draft seen by Reuters said.
