Trump threatens to intervene if Iran shoots protesters
The US warns Iran against using force against protesters in the country.
"If Iran shoots or kills peaceful protesters, as they usually do, the US will come to their rescue," the president writes in a post on Truth Social.
At least three people, two protesters and a volunteer member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, have reportedly been killed during the protests.
Iran's response: Would destabilize the entire region
Iran accuses Israel and the US of fomenting the protests in the country, writes AP.
"What has previously been done in secret is now obvious," writes Ali Larijani, spokesman for Iran's ruling council.
The post comes shortly after Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he is ready to intervene in Iran if protesters are harmed.
“US interference in this internal matter would destabilise the entire region and destroy American interests,” Larijani continues.
The Israeli intelligence agency Mossad has previously openly stated that it supports the protests “not just in words, but on the ground”.
The Iran protests — the point
- Iran’s currency, the rial, fell to record lows against the dollar in late December.
- Protests against the economic crisis began in Tehran, where shopkeepers closed their shops and hundreds of protesters gathered.
- The demonstrations have spread to universities, where students have been urged to join.
- The protests have been described as the largest in Iran in three years and also include women’s rights activists.
- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged the government to listen to the protesters’ demands, and the central bank governor has been replaced.
