The attack
Trump: Bigger attack if Venezuela doesn't do what we want
The US will attack Venezuela again if the country's vice president doesn't do what the US wants. Donald Trump tells the New York Post.
- We are prepared. We have a second wave that is much bigger than the first, he says.
He adds that he has spoken to Venezuela's vice president Delcy Rodríguez - who was sworn in as the country's leader on Saturday after the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro - and that she is aware of the situation.
At Saturday's press conference, Trump said that he is not afraid to deploy ground forces in Venezuela. He tells the newspaper that it is not necessary as long as Rodríguez does not oppose the US's wishes.
The arrest of Maduro
Government source revealed Maduro's movements to the US
The US was able to track Nicolás Maduro's position thanks to a CIA source within the Venezuelan government, according to the New York Times. The person is said to have provided information about Maduro's whereabouts for several days, up until the minutes before the night's operation.
Since the summer, the CIA has reportedly had agents in the Latin American country monitoring Maduro's life and movements. An informant says that the operation was the result of "meticulous planning" and good cooperation between the CIA and the military.
The US has previously said that anyone who provides information leading to Maduro's arrest can expect a reward equivalent to around half a billion kronor. Judging by statements from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump, there is nothing that needs to be paid.
- No one deserves it but us, says Trump according to CNN.
Arrested Nicolás Maduro has arrived in New York - being led off the plane in handcuffs
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have arrived in New York, several media outlets report.
American television channels are broadcasting live from the airport. Maduro has now been taken to the ground, handcuffed and wearing what appears to be a hood over his head.
The presidential couple were arrested by US soldiers during a raid and have been taken to the US on the warship USS Iwo Jima. In New York they will be charged with crimes related to their alleged “narco-terrorism” through cocaine trafficking.
