Zelenskyy replaces defense minister

Updated 22.12 | Published 21.30

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the country's current defense minister, Denys Shmyhal, will be replaced.

"Today we have begun a significant restart - internal changes to make Ukraine more sustainable," he said on social media.

Zelenskyy said he had offered Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization, the position of new defense minister. The 34-year-old Fedorov is relatively unknown among the Ukrainian population.

"Mykhailo is deeply involved in issues related to drones and is very effective in the digitalization of state services and processes," Zelenskyy said.

He does not explain why the current defense minister is being replaced, but he says that Shmyhal will be given a new role and has been offered another position “that is no less important for our stability.”

Shmyhal has only been in his post as defense minister for six months, while the Russian army has made several advances along the front.
