Please accept my sincere gratitude and congratulations on your balanced and eye-opening piece on the disappearance of 9 Thai political dissidents. As one of the persons on the later-known "death list", I can't begin to tell you how warmly it feels that the hidden issue is now known and as widespread as only the New York Times network can do. Although there is a lot more to be explored and exposed, this piece by Ms. Beech is a crack to one of the very dark rooms of the world, as it is well-camouflaged with world-famous smiles and hospitality of the Thais. Don't get me wrong. Thailand's qualities remain there as one of the most appealing places on earth to visit and to do business. But it should not take away the fact that certain members of its political establishment have been unbelievably cruel, dangerous, and criminal. I hope that our 15-year-old struggle for democratizing Thailand wouldn't go in vain, despite the ongoing killing spree of the powers that be.
I am a former Member of Parliament and Minister of Prime Minister's Office of one of the few democratically-elected governments Thailand ever produces. We went through 2 militaty takeovers in 2006 and 2014. I have been in exile for 11 years. Even though the establishment has now hidden its supreme power behind the dress of democracy, Thailand is nothing but a quiet totalitarian state. Covid-19, for instance, is the latest excuse for the establishment-dominated government of General Prayuth Chanocha to extend the tyrannical emergency decree. Rule of law is replaced and dragged on with the rule by decree. Just to name one case.
Let me simply say that I and my fellow democratic fighters are at your service, if we can be of any help for further disclosure. More information is ready to be shared and distributed, if so you agree. We sincerely believe that Thailand can be a lot more civil and humane place than it has been. The true nature of our people is peaceful, kind, and friendly. We can't allow a few bad seeds to hijack it any longer.

ตัวผมเองเป็นอดีตสมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎรและอดีตรัฐมนตรีของรัฐบาลที่มาจากการเลือกตั้งอย่างเป็นประชาธิปไตยไม่กี่รัฐบาลที่เมืองไทยเคยมีมา เราถูกรัฐประหารถึง 2 ครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2549 และ 2557 จนตัวผมเองต้องลี้ภัยมานานถึง 11 ปี ถึงเผด็จการชนชั้นนำของไทยจะซ่อนรูปอยู่ในโฉมหน้าที่ดูเสมือนเป็นรัฐบาลประชาธิปไตยในขณะนี้ แต่เอาเข้าจริงแล้วเมืองไทยก็ยังอยู่ภายใต้ระบอบอำนาจเบ็ดเสร็จ กรณีโควิด-19 คือตัวอย่างที่ดี ระบอบที่มี นายพลประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา มานั่งเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี กำลังอ้างเรื่องโรคมาขยายอำนาจอย่างกว้างขวาง โดยอาศัยเครื่องมือเผด็จการคือ พรก. ฉุกเฉิน หลัก (การใช้กฎหมาย) คือ นิติรัฐ กำลังถูกแทนที่โดย ระบบกฎกู (rule by decree) นี่แค่ยกตัวอย่างเรื่องเดียว
