Brazil's meat industry has devoured over 800 million trees - in just six years
Over 800 million trees have been cut down in the Amazon rainforest in the last six years to make way for pasture and fodder for cows, The Guardian reports. This despite the many warnings about the importance of preserving the rainforest in the fight against climate change.
The beef industry in Brazil has consistently pledged to avoid production that leads to deforestation. But data obtained by the news organization Bureau of Investigative Journalism indicates that 1.7 million hectares of the Amazon have been destroyed near facilities that produce and export large quantities of meat to the outside world.
