The Wagner group 40 miles from Moscow – soldiers and policemen on the highways
Wagner soldiers are moving through the Lipetsk region on their way to Moscow, around 40 kilometers south of the capital, the governor confirms according to AFP. The authorities urge residents to stay indoors.
Earlier on Saturday, the group's leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, stated that they captured the military headquarters in the city of Rostov-on-Don "without a shot." The entry into Lipetsk means that during the day they made it halfway from there to Moscow.
According to Reuters reporters, Russian army helicopters reportedly fired on the group's convoy on the M4 highway, which connects Moscow with the southern parts of the country. There have been no reports of ground fighting.
In the capital Moscow, soldiers and armed police have set up positions and roadblocks on the southern outskirts of the city. Public buildings have been evacuated, and the mayor is urging residents to stay at home and warning that roads may be closed.
Despite calls from President Putin, the FSB security service, generals and others, Prigozhin refuses to give up.
- Why does the country support us? Because we are on a march for justice, says Prigozhin on Telegram.
