Guantánamo closure UN: Close Guantanamo - inhumane treatment
The UN criticizes the USA for the operation of the Guantánamo military prison in Cuba, TT reports.
In a new report, the treatment of the 30 men still held captive is described as "vicious, inhumane and condescending".
Fionnuala Ni Aoláin, who is the first UN observer to be allowed by the United States to visit Guantanamo, said at a press conference that she is calling on the country to close the prison.
Aoláin's report, released on Monday, sharply criticizes the US's operation of the prison and its failure to provide rehabilitation for the detainees subjected to torture. Aoláin also writes that the resources at Guantánamo are not sufficient to deal with the acute mental and physical health problems that the inmates have.
President Joe Biden has said he intends to close Guantánamo, but so far not many steps have been taken in that direction.

The battles in the Liberals
Battle over veil ban risks splitting the Liberals this autumn
The issue of banning headscarves in school risks splitting the Liberals ahead of the national meeting this fall, Expressen reports. The yes side advocates a ban in preschool and primary school and believes that at that age it is never a free choice to wear the veil. The No side believes that a headscarf ban goes against liberal principles such as freedom of religion and the freedom of the individual.
According to the newspaper, the fight risks being even and many within the party fear that the issue will take focus away from other important areas.
Party leader Johan Pehrson welcomes the debate and tells the newspaper that the veil on a child is not an expression he thinks stands for freedom.
