Footballer-turned-president: 'Embodies Georgia'
The incoming president of Georgia, Mikheil Kavelashvili, is a former soccer player who is known in politics primarily for his forceful expressions and his criticism of LGBTQ people. AFP writes.
Billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of Georgian Dream, has called him "the embodiment of a Georgian man".
Historian Nika Gobrinidze, 53, has the opposite attitude:
- I can hardly think of a person less suitable for the role of head of state.
Frank Clark, Kavelashivili's last coach at British club Manchester City, tells The Athletic that he "obviously had no influence on him".
- But I wish him luck if he has to deal with Putin.

The president rejects the replacement: "Not legitimate"
An electoral assembly in Georgia is expected to vote today to replace its current pro-Western president with former soccer player Mikheil Kavelashivil, a close ally of the ruling Georgian Dream party. This is reported by several media. Large parts of the opposition are boycotting the vote.
"I am still your president - there is no legitimate parliament and therefore no legitimate election or installation ceremony," writes incumbent President Salome Zourabichvili on X.
At the same time, demonstrations are also expected from critics who believe that the Georgian Dream brings the country closer to Russia and further away from the EU.
