Japanese fish auction

Price tag for giant tuna in Japan: 14.5 million

A tuna caught off the coast of Japan sold for 207 million yen during the first auction of the year at the Toyosu fish market in Tokyo on Sunday, reports the Japan Times. That is the equivalent of just over 14.5 million kronor and is the second highest price ever.

Expensive! But the buyer also got 276 kilograms of fish for his money.

Wholesaler Yamayuki placed the highest bid for the fifth year in a row. Its chairman says the fish stood out for its “unparalleled freshness”. The tuna will now be served at sushi restaurants run by Michelin-starred restaurant Onodera.

The record is from 2019, writes The Guardian. Then the self-proclaimed “tuna king” Kiyoshi Kimura bought a 278-kilogram tuna for 23.5 million kronor.

Buyer: Hope the fish brings good luck

For the fifth year in a row, Michelin-starred Onodera bought the most expensive fish as Japan's annual fish auction began on Sunday. The expensive deals have built the sushi specialist's stardom and created media hysteria in his homeland, writes The Guardian.

"The first tuna is something that is meant to bring good luck. Our wish is that people will eat this and have a wonderful year," says Onodera's representative at the auction, Shinji Nagao.

Onodera paid 14.5 million kronor for the tuna, which was a 276-kilogram (600-pound) bream.
