US Election Trump's Victory
Panama Canal Chief: Trump Risks Chaos
There is no truth in Donald Trump's claims that China controls the Panama Canal. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, head of the authority that manages the canal, told the Wall Street Journal.
He dismissed Trump's demand for lower shipping costs for American ships.
- We cannot treat Chinese, Americans or anyone else differently. It violates the neutrality pact and international law, and will lead to chaos.
China owns ports on both sides of the Panama Canal, but the canal itself is controlled by the Panamanian authority, says Vásquez Morales.
He adds that he does not understand Trump's claims that Panama has asked the US for three billion dollars to repair the canal. No such request has been made - the repairs are financed by its own revenues, says the authority head.
Greenland's future
Frederiksen: We cannot say everything publicly
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) has made a long post on Instagram after what she describes as a "busy day".
“We
cannot say everything publicly, but you can be sure that we, from the
government's side, are doing everything we can to safeguard the
interests of Denmark and the Commonwealth (Denmark, Greenland and the
Faroe Islands, editor's note),” she writes.
Frederiksen also
writes that she spoke with a number of European leaders during the day,
and that she will meet Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede tomorrow.
She
writes that the US's interest in the Arctic and Greenland is
“completely natural”, and that cooperation in the North Atlantic is more
important than ever. Regarding the issue of Greenlandic independence,
she writes that it is entirely Greenland's decision.
Frederiksen
also emphasizes that she is guarding Denmark's relationship with the US,
which she calls the country's most important ally.
Elon Musk vs Europe
After Musk's criticism: Opening for new British inquiry
There could be a new national inquiry into the ten-year-old grooming scandal in the UK, where many girls were raped by men of predominantly Pakistani origin. This is what Jess Phillips, the minister for work against violence against women and girls, told Sky News.
- Nothing is out of the question. If the victims say "we actually think there should be a national inquiry", I will listen.
This comes after billionaire Elon Musk's intensive campaign against the British government. Musk has made an enormous amount of X-rated posts about the scandal and blamed Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was the chief prosecutor at the time of the scandal.
Musk has, among other things, demanded that Starmer be dismissed and imprisoned, and also attacked Phillips, whom he calls a "rape-genocide defender".
Russia carries out mass deportations after terror attack
Russia deports more than 80,000 migrants in 2024, almost double the number the year before, authorities said, according to AFP.
The tougher measures against migrants are a response to the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow on March 22 last year, when more than 140 people were killed by Tajik nationalists. IS has claimed responsibility for the attack.
It is not clear which nationalities were deported, but most migrants in Russia are workers from the former Soviet republics in Central Asia.
