Meta's future

Criticism of Zuckerberg: "Kneels before Trump"

Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg is kneeling before Donald Trump with his decision to stop fact-checking on his platforms. This is what Nina Jankowicz, former head of the US Homeland Security agency's anti-disinformation work, tells The Guardian.

- The fact-checkers have not been politically biased, but have been perceived as such because of the politically motivated smear campaign that Zuckerberg is now participating in and capitulating to, she says.

With the decision, Zuckerberg joins X owner Elon Musk in a "race to the bottom", adds Jankowicz.

Musk himself is positive about Zuckerberg's announcement.

"This is cool", he writes in an X post.

Meta stops fact-checking: "Restoring freedom of expression"

Meta is stopping fact-checking posts on Facebook and Instagram - and replacing it with a solution similar to the community-based system that X uses.

“We’re going back to our roots and focusing on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free speech to our platforms,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement.

Zuckerberg cited a shift in the political and social landscape, saying that too many mistakes had been made with the existing fact-checking program, among other things.

Both NBC and the Wall Street Journal linked the change to Zuckerberg’s efforts to strengthen his ties with President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously been banned from Meta’s platforms.

The change applies to the United States. It is currently unclear whether it will be introduced in more markets.
