South Korean plane crash

Feathers found in plane engine – but question marks remain

South Korean investigators have discovered bird feathers in one of the engines of the crashed plane in Muan. Video clips also show that the plane collided with birds, police investigators say, according to Reuters.

There are still no answers as to why the pilots did not deploy the landing gear during the emergency landing. Bird strikes do not usually affect landing gear, according to experts.

Yesterday, two Korean investigators flew to the United States, where they will analyze flight data and cockpit voice recordings for a five-day period. The latter was compiled in its entirety over the weekend, but it is still unclear whether it will be released to the public.

179 people died in the crash.

Transport minister resigns, vows better safety

South Korean Transport Minister Park Sang-Woo has announced that safety at the country's airports will be rapidly improved after a plane crash in December that killed 179 people.

At the same time, he announced his resignation:

- I feel a heavy responsibility for this disaster, he said, according to Reuters.

The plane failed to deploy its landing gear and was forced to make an emergency landing on its "belly". At high speed, the plane skidded across the runway before crashing straight into a concrete wall. The airport's design has been criticized.

His colleague Joo Jong-Wan admits that the safety equipment was not adequate, but adds that everything was done in accordance with national and international regulations. Police are now investigating how the concrete-covered runway embankment was built.
