One person has died after a Tesla cybertruck exploded outside Donald Trump's hotel in Las Vegas.

The incident is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, writes ABC News.

"We've never seen anything like it," writes Tesla founder Elon Musk on X.

The incident occurred at 8:30 on New Year's Day, local time, outside the 64-story hotel.

The person who died was in the Tesla, police say.

The driver is said to have driven the vehicle to the hotel's entrance, whereupon it exploded. Seven people who were nearby were slightly injured.

Videos on social media show the air around the hotel filled with smoke.

It is unclear what caused the incident, but police are currently investigating it as a possible act of terrorism.

Filled with fireworks

Tesla founder Elon Musk writes on X that Tesla is investigating the incident itself. According to him, the Cybertruck was rented and the explosion had nothing to do with the car.

“We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb that was in the rented Cybertruck,” Musk writes.

A surveillance video shows that the Tesla was filled with fireworks – which were set off in the explosion.

There have been cases in the past where batteries in Tesla cars have caught fire on their own.

Trump comments

The Trump Organization, a family business, has commented on the incident in a statement shared by Donald Trump's son Eric Trump on X:

"The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remains our top priority. We extend our gratitude to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their swift action and professionalism," he writes.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible act of terrorism, reports ABC News. According to information to the channel, there was an explosive load in the car.

– The vehicle drives right up to the hotel's glass entrance and smoke billows from it. A large explosion then occurs in the vehicle, says Kevin McMahill from the Las Vegas police.

The gender or identity of the deceased has not been determined.

“The entire Tesla management team is investigating this right now ... we have never seen anything like this before,” writes Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, on X.

Eric Trump, son of Donald Trump, thanks emergency personnel and police on social media for their “quick response”.

The 64-story hotel is located right next to Las Vegas' iconic main street Las Vegas Boulevard, often called “The Strip”. Most of the hotel guests have been evacuated to other hotels due to the incident.
