On Trump’s third day as US president, he threatens tougher sanctions against Russia – if Vladimir Putin does not agree to negotiations on Ukraine.

“Soon I will have no other choice but to impose high taxes and punitive tariffs on all goods that Russia sells to the US and other countries,” he wrote on his own social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday afternoon.

In 2023, Trump said he would end the war in 24 hours – but that has not happened. Now, however, he is threatening Russian President Putin with tough sanctions if the war does not end soon, CNBC reports.

On his own social media platform Truth Social, Trump has issued a longt message in a post.

The president writes, among other things, that he wants to do “President Putin a favor.”

“It (the war) is only going to get worse. If we don’t make a deal soon, I have no choice but to impose high taxes and punitive tariffs and sanctions on all goods that Russia sells to the United States and other countries,” he writes.

“Do it now and stop this ridiculous war!” Trump also wrote.

“Love the Russian people”

Trump writes that he has always had a good relationship with Putin.

“I don’t want to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people.”

He concludes by saying that “no more lives will be lost.”

On Tuesday, Trump said that he would speak with Putin “soon” and added that Putin is destroying his own country by not reaching an agreement with Ukraine.

Donald Trump says he will soon speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

– He can't be happy, things are not going very well for him, said the newly inaugurated US president on Monday.

Vladimir Putin is destroying his own country by not reaching an agreement with Ukraine, according to Donald Trump.

– He should make a deal. I think he is destroying Russia by not making a deal. I think Russia is going to have big problems, Trump said in the Oval Office of the White House after Monday's presidential inauguration.

Trump says he gets along well with Putin and that he believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants a peace agreement.

– Most people thought the war would be over in a week and now it is in its third year, Trump said.

Vladimir Putin says he is open to talks about the Ukraine war.

– I want to emphasize that the goal should not be a short ceasefire, but a lasting peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people, the Russian president says on Russian state television.
