Middle East Crisis Gaza War
US Wants to Build Luxury Housing and High-Speed Trains in Gaza
Donald Trump's administration, led by envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, has presented a proposal for how Gaza can be rebuilt and modernized. The Wall Street Journal reports.
The plan is called "Project Sunrise" and aims to turn the Gaza Strip into a place for luxury housing, high-speed trains and AI-optimized power grids. According to the WSJ, it has been presented to attract countries and investors to contribute to the reconstruction after the war.
The US could consider covering around 20 percent of the cost over a ten-year period, but the proposal lacks details. For example, it is not clear where the more than two million Palestinians who have been forced to flee the war will live during the work.
The newspaper has spoken to several officials who are skeptical and believe the plan is unrealistic. Steven Cook at the CFR Middle East Department, a think tank, agrees.
– Nothing will happen until Hamas disarms and Hamas will not disarm so nothing will happen, he says.
The IS attack in Palmyra
US attacks a large number of IS targets in Syria
On
Friday, the US attacked suspected IS targets in Syria, several media
outlets report. The attacks come after President Donald Trump promised
revenge for the killing of two American soldiers last weekend.
The
US has used fighter jets and helicopters to strike weapons depots and
buildings, a source told the New York Times. The source describes it as
“a massive attack” that is expected to last well into Saturday morning.
Last
weekend’s attack is the first time US soldiers have been killed in
Syria since dictator Bashar al-Assad was overthrown last year. After the
attack, both US and Syrian authorities stated that a lone perpetrator
opened fire on the soldiers, who were participating in anti-terror
operations in Palmyra.
