Political situation in Pakistan

Khan and wife sentenced to prison for corruption

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife have been sentenced to long prison terms for corruption offences allegedly committed during his time in power. This is reported by Bloomberg, citing Pakistani media.

Khan, who was ousted three years ago in a no-confidence vote, was accused of undervaluing and then buying gifts given to the state during visits by foreign leaders.

Khan has been sentenced to 17 years in prison and his wife to a similar sentence. It is one of several sentences against the former prime minister, who has been imprisoned since 2023. Khan himself believes that the sentences are politically motivated.

Khan's party condemns and calls the sentence a "scam"

Imran Khan's supporters and party condemn the prison sentence against the former prime minister, who has been accused of corruption. They believe the verdict is politically motivated and a spokesperson for Khan says there was no intent.

His party writes in a post on social media that the verdict is a “hoax” and has called for protests in the Punjab region.

Khan and his wife are sentenced to long prison sentences for embezzling items that the state received in connection with visits from leaders in other countries, for amounts far below market value.
