Mexican President: America does not belong to any power

The American continent does not belong to any single power, says Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Since the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro this weekend, US President Donald Trump has emphasized the country's dominance over the Western Hemisphere.

Trump has described this weekend's arrest of Maduro as an update of the so-called Monroe Doctrine from 1823, which declared that Latin America belonged to the US sphere of interest.

- America does not belong to any doctrine or power. The American continent belongs to the peoples of the countries that make it up, said Claudia Sheinbaum in a speech on Monday.
