Reactions to the attack on Venezuela

Colombian president: Caracas is under attack

Caracas is under attack, writes Colombian President Gustavo Petro on X.

“Warn the whole world: Venezuela has been attacked! They are bombing with missiles,” writes Petro, without specifically naming any country.

Petro calls for an immediate UN meeting.

Donald Trump has threatened that the US could attack Venezuela, and several major Osint accounts on social media – which use open sources and are usually well-informed – are pointing to the US as responsible for this morning’s attacks. However, there is no evidence of this. The US government says it is aware of the explosions, but has not commented further.

Bildt: "Trump has decided to go to war"

The attacks on the Venezuelan capital Caracas constitute a declaration of war, according to Sweden's former Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.

"Trump has decided to go to war," Bildt writes on X.

He also believes that helicopters from special forces can be identified in video clips from the scene. Independent media have not yet been able to verify the clips.

Donald Trump has previously said that he is considering attacking Venezuela militarily.

Analysis: The question is whether this is the beginning of something bigger

If the US is behind the attacks on Venezuela, the goal could be to have President Nicolás Maduro deposed. This is what BBC correspondent Will Grant writes in an analysis of the situation.

“The US claims that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro seized power through illegitimate means and that he is personally involved in drug trafficking,” he notes.

No evidence of Maduro’s involvement in the drug trade has been presented.

Sky News’ chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay says that the attacks are “really spreading a lot of panic,” and that many are now wondering what they mean.

– We are still waiting for official confirmation whether this is the beginning of something bigger, he tells his own channel.
