The attack on Venezuela

Attacks on Venezuela last night – reportedly ordered by Trump

Donald Trump has ordered attacks on Venezuela, including targeting military facilities, according to sources to several media outlets.

Explosions were heard on Saturday morning, Swedish time, in the Venezuelan capital Caracas and several other cities, several media outlets report.

– One of them was so powerful that my windows rattled, CNN correspondent Osmary Hernandez tells the TV channel.

Video clips show large fireballs, helicopters and clouds of smoke over Caracas, while soldiers are seen on the city's streets.

According to Reuters, parts of the city near a military base are without power. Other cities in Venezuela have also been attacked.

Venezuela condemns US – declares national emergency

The Venezuelan government blames the US for the attacks on Caracas and several other cities in the country. In a statement, it condemns the attacks and declares a national emergency.

“An extremely serious military aggression,” the government writes in the statement, which has been posted by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

It also accuses the US of being after the country’s oil and minerals. The entire population is now being called on to mobilize.

“The entire country must be activated to defeat this imperialist aggression.”

The US has not explicitly claimed responsibility for the attack, but US government officials tell CBSNews and several other media outlets that Donald Trump has now taken his threat to attack the country seriously.
