Suspected sabotage in the Baltic Sea

Prohibited cargo on ship suspected of having cut cable

The ship Fitburg, suspected of having caused the cable break between Finland and Estonia on New Year's Eve, was loaded with steel products covered by EU sanctions rules, reports TT.

The ship was seized on New Year's Eve and the entire crew of 14 people has been questioned by the police. Customs has now also seized the ship's cargo.

The Fitburg sails under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and was en route from St. Petersburg in Russia to Haifa in Israel.

According to the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, there is no known connection between the cable break that Fitburg is suspected of having caused and the two cable breaks on a line between Sweden and Estonia that occurred during the same 24 hours.

Two arrested after Finnish-Estonian cable breach

Two crew members of the ship Fitsburg, suspected of breaking the cable between Finland and Estonia on New Year's Eve, have been arrested and two more have been banned from travelling, Finnish police say.

The ship was stopped on Wednesday after sailing with its anchor in the water. It was seized and taken to the port of Kantvik. The Finnish Customs have stated that the ship was loaded with steel products covered by sanctions against Russia.

A temporary flight ban has been imposed over the port of Kantvik.
