Mamdani: Many want to see if the left can govern
New York's new mayor Zohran Mamdani is aware that his policies could have national consequences. In his speech at Thursday's inauguration ceremony, Mamdani said that people around the United States will be watching developments to see "if the left can govern," writes the New York Times.
Mamdani, who ran on free public transportation and child care, promises to be "bold" and says that he will answer to New Yorkers and not billionaires who believe they can "buy our democracy."
- I was elected as a democratic socialist and I intend to govern as a democratic socialist, he says according to Fox News.

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York's new mayor on Thursday, reports the New York Times. The ceremony was held at midnight in a closed subway station.
Leftist politician Mamdani becomes the city's first Muslim mayor. He has promised to introduce free buses, freeze rents and universal preschool. He was sworn in by the state's Attorney General Letitia James, known for pursuing legal cases against Donald Trump.
A larger ceremony is expected later on Thursday with speeches from Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
