The Syrian military is bombing Kurdish areas in Aleppo and the interim government in Damascus is demanding that all Kurdish fighting groups leave the city.

Shortly before the attacks, government forces announced that the Kurdish areas in the city should be considered “closed military zones”.

Clashes between government forces and Kurdish groups in Aleppo, Syria, continued on Wednesday. Shortly after 13:00, Swedish time, AFP’s correspondent reported that the military had begun bombing the city’s Kurdish areas.

The interim government in Syria later demanded that Kurdish militant groups immediately leave two designated areas, Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, in Aleppo.

Two humanitarian corridors have reportedly been created to allow civilians to escape. According to AFP, thousands of civilians have managed to flee that route.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was announced that schools and public institutions in Aleppo would be closed due to the violence.

On Tuesday, nine people were killed in violent clashes, mainly civilians.

The Kurds are demanding a more decentralized Syria, which has been rejected by the country's new government.

Instability and insecurity have prevailed in the country since the Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew the feared dictator Bashar al-Assad at the end of 2024.
