The future of Greenland

US and Denmark to meet on Greenland next week

The US and Denmark will hold a meeting on Greenland, confirms Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, according to several media outlets.

At a press conference, he was asked about Greenland and replied that he is not there to "talk about Denmark and military interventions", according to DR.

- I will meet them next week. We will have talks with them there. I have nothing more to add.

Rubio says that it has always been Donald Trump's intention to take over Greenland, and that an American president always keeps the door open to military action, writes TV2.

He also adds that as a diplomat he prefers a different solution, according to Dagbladet.

White House: Trump chooses diplomacy first

Donald Trump and his administration have not ruled out a military operation to take over Greenland. However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated during a press conference that the president wants to resolve the issue through diplomacy, reports AFP.

– But I just want to clarify, the president's first choice has always been diplomacy, she says.

Furthermore, Leavitt says that the president "never rules out" any options:

– All proposals are always on the table for President Trump.

Sources: Danish and Greenlandic politicians clash at rowdy Teams meeting

On Tuesday afternoon, Danish and Greenlandic politicians held a chaotic and rowdy Teams meeting, several meeting participants told DR.

Pipaluk Lynge, chairman of Greenland's Foreign Affairs Committee, is said to have been furious that no Greenlandic politicians were invited to the emergency meeting in the Folketing later that evening.

The Danish side wanted to ensure that Denmark and Greenland share all the information they have during the diplomatic crisis – but the Greenlandic side has instead suggested that they themselves hold a dialogue with Washington, which shook the Danes, according to the sources.

– We are adults. We have a parliament, we have ministers who can speak for themselves. And that's what I said: We can talk to other countries without holding the Danes' hand, Lynge tells DR today.

There have also been concerns expressed that such sensitive political discussions were held over Teams, according to the sources.
