Trump's USA Greenland's future

Trump reiterates that the US "needs" Greenland

US President Donald Trump has reiterated that the country wants control over Greenland. In an interview with The Atlantic, which mostly deals with the operation in Venezuela, he does not rule out American interventions in other parts of the world.

He claims that the self-governing Danish island is "surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships."

- We absolutely need Greenland.

The statement has caused Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to react. Such statements are "completely meaningless," she says, according to TV2.

- The US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Commonwealth (Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, editor's note).

This weekend, a former Trump aide, who is also the wife of one of Trump's advisors, published a map showing Greenland as American.

Greenland's leader roars back: "Disrespectful"

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reacts to the map image published by Donald Trump's former deputy press secretary Katie Miller, which illustrates the self-governing Danish island as American. In a post on Facebook, he calls it "disrespectful".

"Relations between countries and people are based on respect and international law, not on symbolic markings that ignore our status and our rights", writes Nielsen.

It was after the US arrest of the Venezuelan president that Miller published a picture of Greenland covered with the American flag, followed by the word "soon".

In an interview with The Atlantic on Sunday, Trump reiterated that the US "needs" Greenland.

Expert: The word about Greenland should be seen as a threat

Katie Miller's post with a picture of Greenland covered with an American flag and the word "soon" should be seen as a threat. This is what Rasmus Brun Pedersen, associate professor of international studies at Aarhus University, tells Danish TV2.

– I think it should clearly be seen as a threat. It is a sign that there are forces close to the president who are working to expand American territory at our expense, he says.

Katie Miller was previously deputy press secretary to Donald Trump and is married to Trump's advisor Stephen Miller.

Christian Friis Bach, chairman of the Danish Defense Committee, says that it is obvious that forces within the Magar movement want to use the attack on Venezuela to put pressure on Greenland, but adds:

– What happened in Venezuela is aimed at an illegal president who is accused of crimes. Greenland is a democratic and well-functioning country.
