The charges against George Santos
Republican Santos arrested and indicted on 13 counts
Republican politician George Santos has been arrested and charged with 13 counts, US media reports.
The charges include fraud, money laundering and that he lied to Congress. According to a statement from the US Department of Justice, he is suspected, among other things, of applying to receive benefits because he was unemployed despite having a job and using campaign money to buy designer clothes.
"Overall, the charges show that Santos used lies to improve his career prospects and for his own financial gain," said federal prosecutor Breon Peace, according to the AP.

E Jean Carroll: A victory for all women in the United States
Author and journalist E Jean Carroll is "overwhelmed with joy" for women across the United States. She says that to NBC News after a jury found former US President Donald Trump guilty of having subjected her to abuse and defamation.
The 79-year-old Carroll says the victory is not about the millions Trump will pay in damages, but about restoring his reputation.
Carroll also says the case shows that the idea of a "perfect victim" who screams, calls the police and documents what happened is outdated.
- Yesterday we demolished that concept, it is gone.
Trump, a 2024 presidential candidate, has consistently denied Carroll's allegations of abuse in an exam room in the 1990s. A spokesperson has said that Trump intends to "appeal and ultimately win."
