The warning: The bird virus is changing rapidly – more and more mammals are being infected
The virus behind the bird flu, H5N1, is currently changing at a rapid pace according to experts AFP spoke to. The number of cases of infected birds worldwide is at record levels, and the fact that the virus has been found in more and more mammals worries scientists.
Richard Webby, head of the WHO's Collaborating Center for the Study of Infection in Animals, told the news agency that the infection in mammals is a "very, very worrying sign". Among other things, he highlights indications from a Spanish mink farm that the virus appears to be spreading between mammals.
At the same time, the experts emphasize that the risk of people becoming infected remains very low.
