South Korean First Lady Kim Keon-Hee appears to have disappeared from the public eye following a scandal that erupted last winter, reports The Straits Times.
In January, the first lady was accused of illegally receiving a Dior bag worth around 20,000 kroner, and she has not been seen since.
For example, she was not present at the independence movement commemoration on March 1, making her the first first lady to miss the ceremony in 25 years.
South Korea expert Sojin Lim believes that the likely explanation is that there are elections in less than a month, and that President Yoon Suk Yeol and his administration do not want the handbag scandal to cause damage.
The British newspaper The Independent draws parallels to "Kate-gate", referring to the speculation surrounding Princess Kate Middleton's absence after stomach surgery.

Report: Influence attempts from China a likely election threat
China may use cyber attacks and AI bots to try to influence the election to South Korea's parliament in April, the American think tank Heritage Foundation warns, according to the Korea Times.
In January, the South Korean intelligence service NIS stated that it had discovered several news sites that were claimed to be South Korean even though this was not the case, writes Nikkei Asia. The content was characterized by pro-China and anti-US messages.
The NIS also expresses concerns that North Korea is investigating how the country can use generative artificial intelligence to spread disinformation.
- We need to build AI and digital systems that detect and combat those who use AI and digital technology to create fake news, says President Yoon Suk Yeol.
