Nuclear power push in Brussels: "Have no chance otherwise"
Without nuclear power, "we have no chance of reaching our climate goals in time," says Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Council. The statement was made on Thursday morning ahead of a special summit in Brussels on nuclear power.
- Nuclear power has an important role to play, says Birol.
On Thursday, representatives from over 30 countries meet. The meeting is strategic and no concrete decisions are expected. But the signal value is strong and such a meeting would have been unthinkable in Europe in the years after the Fukushima accident in 2011, AP writes.
The EU countries are divided into two camps when it comes to the future of nuclear power. France is pushing for more nuclear power, while Germany represents the other line.

Protest at nuclear meeting: "Delaying the transition"
Greenpeace and several other climate organizations are protesting outside the big nuclear meeting in Brussels today. They are strongly critical of the increased interest in building new nuclear power, writes the Brussels Times.
Lorelei Limousin at Greenpeace EU thinks it is impossible to take the politicians seriously when they talk about expanding the power battle. She sees nuclear power as a "dangerous distraction" from real solutions that can have an effect in the near term.
- It will only delay the entire energy transition. Why waste so much time and money on these fairy tales?
The expansion of nuclear power is dividing the EU countries. Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent lack of Russian gas, has created increased interest in nuclear power in many countries, writes Bloomberg.
