Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is verbally attacking the EU in general – and Foreign Minister Josep Borrell in particular, reports Politico.
- Europe's colonialist vision of Latin America lives on. Josep Borrell for example, is a racist, he is a colonialist, he is a warmonger, Maduro said during a public appearance on Tuesday.
Maduro did not specify what Borrell said or did that angered him. The EU has previously expressed concern about the initial situation before the presidential election in Venezuela in July, when several opposition politicians were stopped from participating.
"The EU will continue to call on the Venezuelan authorities to protect the civil and political rights of the Venezuelan people," writes European External Action Service spokesperson Peter Stano after Maduro's speech.

Opposition leader: "What we warned about has now happened"
The opposition in Venezuela accuses President Nicolás Maduro of carving out his own field of competition after key candidates were blocked from standing in the presidential election in July, writes AFP.
- What we warned about for several months has now happened. The regime has chosen its challengers, said opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who has been barred from holding public office by judges loyal to Maduro.
13 people, including Maduro, have now registered as presidential candidates. One of them is Manuel Rosales, governor of the province of Zulia, whose party until Monday expressed its support for the president, writes Reuters.

Maduro: I will defend the country with my life
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been formally registered as the Socialist Party's candidate for the presidential election in July this year.
- I love this country without limits and have defended it since I was a child, I will defend it with my life if necessary, he says according to the Anadolu Ajansi news agency.
According to the party, 4.2 million members voted in a vote earlier this year that Maduro reportedly won by a wide margin.
Outside the party, however, Maduro has failing support in public opinion. According to AP, the opposition would win "a landslide victory" if they were given "half a chance".
The opposition claimed on Tuesday that they had been stopped from registering their candidate with the electoral authority.
