Sheinbaum is declared the victor in the historic election

The left-wing politician Claudia Sheinbaum has been declared the winner in the Mexican presidential election, several media reports.

Preliminary results from the electoral authority INE show that Sheinbaum has an unassailable lead – the lead over main opponent Xochitl Gálvez is 30 percentage points.

"I will not let you down," Sheinbaum said as she addressed her supporters on election night. She also announced that Gálvez called her to admit defeat.

Sheinbaum belongs to the Morena Party and is thus a party mate of Mexico's outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The 61-year-old climate scientist, former mayor of Mexico City, will be the country's first female leader.

Biden congratulates Sheinbaum after "historic" victory

Joe Biden congratulates the leftist politician Claudia Sheinbaum on the victory in the Mexican presidential election, AFP reports.

Sheinbaum will be the first woman to be appointed president of the country, something Biden calls "historic" in his statement.

"I look forward to working with her, in the spirit of friendship and partnership that characterizes the bond between our countries," reads the statement from Biden.
