Analysis: Trump stops painting Biden as a zombie - "may have set the bar unnecessarily low"
Joe Biden and Donald Trump appear to have different tactics as they prepare for this week's big presidential debate, notes Politico in its guiding Playbook. While Trump seems to improvise his way out at caucuses, Biden has holed up at Camp David with a group of close confidantes for more traditional debate preparation.
CNN's Stephen Collinson notes in an analysis that Trump's tactics seem to have shifted before the debate. After months of portraying Biden as a "brain-dead zombie", the tone is now considerably softer, which Collinson says may indicate that Republicans are concerned that they "may have set an unnecessarily low bar for the president's performance".
And it is, after all, Trump who needs the debate the most, says political science professor EJ Dionne Jr. in a column in the Washington Post.
"Trump needs to excite more voters, keep himself in check to appear reasonable, hide his love of conspiracy theories and not make the debate about himself. I am skeptical that he will succeed.”

Details: Two favorites on Trump's vice presidential list
Donald Trump's vice-presidential candidate will most likely be present at Thursday's debate against Joe Biden, says the ex-president, who also indicates that he has made a decision, writes NBC News.
According to the channel's data, the election will most likely fall on either North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum or Ohio Senator JD Vance. Marco Rubio, senator from Florida, is said to still be in the running as a potential but less likely candidate.
Trump has previously said he will announce his choice in mid-July but the sources say that is not set in stone.
