Analysis: Not impossible to replace Biden - but difficult
The night's duel between Joe Biden and Donald Trump immediately resulted in a discussion about the possibilities of replacing the president with a new candidate.
Thomas L Friedman writes in the New York Times that the debate is the most heartbreaking moment he has experienced in an American election campaign. Despite the fact that Joe Biden is a "good man and a good president", he cannot run for re-election, Friedman believes.
"Great dangers and opportunities hang over us. A younger Joe Biden could have been the right leader, but time has finally caught up with him. And it became painfully and inescapably obvious today," he writes.
Replacing Biden is by no means impossible, but would involve a complicated and unpredictable process, NBC's Ben Kamisar points out.
According to the rules, it is almost impossible to replace an already nominated candidate without the person's consent. Should Biden choose to drop out of the race before he is formally nominated for president at the Democratic convention in August, a new candidate must win a majority of the 4,000 delegates.
"The whole process is creaky and hasn't been considered in decades," writes Politico's Steven Shepard.

Biden's effort is being seen - several Democrats want him to drop out: "I'm done"
Joe Biden's performance in the night's presidential debate is seen by both commentators and party members. CNN's political commentator Van Jones, who was formerly an adviser to Barack Obama, describes the duel as "painful".
- He (Biden) is a good man who loves his country. He does the best he can. "But he had a chance tonight to restore confidence and he failed to do that," Jones said.
Biden's advanced age and ability to rule the country have been a hot potato during the election campaign. Several media outlets note that the president spoke incoherently and stumbled over his words when faced with his challenger Donald Trump. The performance is considered to have been so poor that several Democrats are now raising the question of whether Biden should really be the party's presidential candidate.
- It is difficult to argue that Biden should be our nominee, says a source within the party to CNN.
Several Democrats express particular concern about the first minutes of the debate, when Biden appeared to be standing frozen behind the podium with a staring gaze and an open mouth.
- Biden is done, says lawyer Jay Surdukowski, who has worked with Democratic presidential campaigns, to Politico.

Contributors horrified - want to replace Joe Biden
Major Democratic contributors want to replace Joe Biden after his performance in tonight's televised debate. This is stated by CNBC, which writes that the first concerned voices were heard already after 15 minutes of debate.
- This is terrible. Worse than I thought possible. Everyone I talk to says Biden should drop out, one person told CNBC anonymously.
An adviser to one of the party's biggest donors calls the debate "a complete derailment".
Another Democratic campaign veteran says she will contact party leadership to discuss how to move forward.

No obvious successor: "The US is not ready for Harris"
There is no obvious candidate to take over from Joe Biden if he decides to drop out of the race for the presidency. Among the names raised in the media, Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer return, among others.
Although Harris is the most natural choice, there is much that speaks against her, writes The Guardian. Among other things, the vice president has been criticized for having an unclear role in the Biden administration and is struggling with poor public opinion figures.
Democratic strategist Theryn Bond also does not believe that the United States is "ready" for a black woman in the presidency.
- This country is too divided, unfortunately we are not there yet. I don't think she will be able to lead the Democrats to victory, she tells Sky News.
Also J B Pritzker, Sherrod Brown and Dean Phillips are raised as possible candidates
