USA: Kenya must respect human rights
The US demands that Kenya respect the freedom of assembly enshrined in the country's constitution. That's what US national security adviser John Kirby says, according to AFP.
The statement comes a day after 22 people were killed in clashes with the military during protests against a proposed tax hike.
- We continue to call to mind so that no more Kenyans are harmed when they exercise their statutory right to demonstrate, says Kirby.
Kenyan President William Ruto stated earlier today that he did not sign the controversial tax increase, and that the proposal will be withdrawn.
The US is described as one of Kenya's most important allies.

The death toll passes 20: "The government shows that it does not care"
The death toll after yesterday's tax protests in Kenya has risen to 23, according to doctors in the country, according to Reuters. A further 30 people are being treated for gunshot wounds.
Parliament made a decision on Wednesday to call in the military against the protesters, reports the Kenyan Standard. The organizers behind the protests of the last few days have called on people to continue to take to the streets and peacefully express their dissatisfaction with the government.
- By shooting at us sharply, the government shows that it does not care, said 40-year-old Steve, who participated in the protests at the parliament in Nairobi on Tuesday, to AFP.
