The assassination attempt on Robert Fico caused alarm bells to ring in the Kremlin.

Now the protection for Vladimir Putin is greatly strengthened.

The president's food is poison tested in a mobile laboratory before he is allowed to eat it.

The Russian security service is ramping up security around President Putin to an "unprecedented degree", anonymous officials told The Moscow Times.

The latest attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is said to be the reason. But the ICC's arrest warrant and the threat from radical Islamists are also highlighted.

- He is protected by an entire army of visible and invisible guards, says an official to the newspaper.

The 71-year-old is under constant surveillance. Even when he eats.

Now all his meals are tested using a mobile lab, according to a source.

- The president has personal chefs who always travel with him. Food is also brought. But even then, there is always a special group that travels with Putin and checks all meals before Putin eats them.

"Putin almost always agrees to the demands"

Investigative journalist Andrey Soldatov says Putin is one of the few leaders who accepts increased security when his guards ask for it.

- Other leaders tend to be in constant conflict with their guards, but not Putin. He almost always agrees to their demands. And right now I think he is following them, he told the Moscow Times.

KGB defector Yuri Shvets has previously stated that Putin's greatest fear in life is to be poisoned, as the Kremlin does not have "the slightest control" over Novichok and other poisons suspected of having been used in murders and attempted murders of political opponents.

- Not even Putin knows who has these weapons now. It is a source of immense tension for him. He is afraid. It is not impossible that he is poisoned. The easiest way, he has previously said.
