Trump on Somaliland: Does anyone even know what it is?

The United States has no plans to follow Israel and recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state, President Donald Trump announced.

– Does anyone, really, know what Somaliland is? he said in a telephone interview with the New York Post.

Somaliland declared itself an independent republic in 1991 but has never been recognized by the outside world until Israel's announcement on Friday evening. The news is being received with anger and criticism in Somalia and other parts of Africa.

"It risks setting an example that will have far-reaching consequences for peace and stability in Africa," the African Union wrote in a statement referenced by AFP.

Somalia: Israel wants to move Gazans to Somaliland

The fact that Israel, as the first country in the world, recognizes Somaliland as a sovereign state is about wanting to force people in Gaza to the region. Somalia's Foreign Minister Ali Omar claims this in an interview with Al Jazeera.

- It is well known that Israel has this as its goal, he says.

Reports that Israel sees Somaliland as a possible destination for Palestinians have surfaced regularly in recent months. The Palestinian Authority's Foreign Ministry draws the same connection as Omar, calling the proposal "a red line."

67-vehicle pileup in Japan - two dead

Two people have died and 26 people have been injured after a serious traffic accident northwest of Tokyo on Friday, reports the AP. A total of 67 vehicles were involved.

The accident began with two trucks colliding on a highway outside the city of Minakami. The slippery road conditions meant that the vehicles behind could not brake and crashed into each other. Then a fire broke out and spread to about twenty cars, several of which were burned out.
