The EU sees Polish legal reform – large protests in Warsaw
The European Court of Justice rules that Poland refused to comply with the EU's rules on legal independence, AP writes.
Poland's controversial 2019 reshuffle of the judiciary contravenes Union law in the EU, according to the court.
Among other things, the Polish Supreme Court's disciplinary department is criticized for not meeting the requirement of "independence and impartiality". The EU now demands that Poland take measures to change the system, otherwise the country risks heavy fines.
The criticism does not only come from the EU. On Sunday, around half a million people protested in central Warsaw against the country's eroded democracy.

Poland's response to criticism: "The EU court is corrupt"
The Polish government does not seem particularly willing to meet the EU's demands, writes AFP. The European Court of Justice ruled on Monday that Poland's controversial 2019 reshuffle of the judiciary violates EU rules on judicial independence.
- The EU's highest court is corrupt, Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro comments on the announcement, and claims that the verdict "was not written by judges but by politicians".
Poland's ruling conservative and nationalist parties have been at odds with Brussels since coming to power in 2015. The EU has repeatedly questioned the independence of the Polish legal system.
