Heavy EU summit: Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

EU Commission Vice-President Teresa Ribera says that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, reports Reuters.

– The genocide in Gaza shows Europe's inability to act and speak with one voice, even as protests spread to European cities and 14 members of the UN Security Council demand an immediate ceasefire, she says at the opening ceremony of the academic year at Sciences Po University in Paris.

Ribera is the Social Democrats' most influential member of the Commission. Her statement is the sharpest yet from an EU Commissioner.

The statement is condemned by Israel and Oren Marmorstein, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, calls Ribera a "megaphone for Hamas propaganda".

Abortion pills banned in Texas – mail carriers can be sued

The US state of Texas is taking new measures to stop abortion, Axios reports. The new legislation will allow anyone to sue anyone who prescribes, delivers or distributes abortion drugs to residents of the state.

This would even include the person delivering the package.

The number of abortions in Texas reached record levels in December 2024 – despite a near-total state ban. One of the reasons is said to be increased access to digital healthcare solutions that offer abortion pills remotely.

The motion is an attempt to effectively stop the state's residents from performing such medical abortions, according to the Washington Post.
