UN sounds the alarm: Large increase in civilian deaths in Sudan

The UN agency OHCHR is sounding the alarm that more and more civilians are being killed in the civil war in Sudan, Reuters reports. During the first six months of 2025, at least 3,300 civilians were killed, mainly in war-torn Darfur in the western parts of the country.

- Every day we receive more reports of the horrors on the ground, says Li Fung, the UN representative in Sudan.

The majority of the deaths were caused by air and drone attacks. Around 1,000 people have been executed without any trial.

75 killed in drone attack on mosque in Sudan

75 people were killed in al-Fashir in western Sudan when the paramilitary RSF carried out a drone attack on a mosque in a refugee camp on Friday, AFP reports.

“The bodies were dug out from under the rubble of the mosque,” an aid organization said in a statement.

Al-Fashir is the last town in the Darfur region still controlled by the Sudanese army. The United Nations and human rights organizations have raised the alarm about war crimes and catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Darfur.
