Iran rages against Europe as new sanctions loom
Europe will likely reimpose sanctions on Iran at the end of the month, French President Emmanuel Macron said after the latest round of nuclear talks.
– Yes. I think so, because the latest news from the Iranians is not serious, Macron told Channel 12 on Thursday evening.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded in a post on X that the country had presented a “fair and balanced” proposal. His deputy defense minister Saeed Khatibzadeh expanded the criticism at a press conference and accused the EU of abusing the mechanism that automatically reimposes sanctions, Reuters reports.
– What the Europeans are doing is politically biased and politically motivated, he says.
New UN sanctions on Iran: “Clear aggression”
The UN is reimposing heavy economic sanctions on Iran over the country's nuclear program. The UN Security Council decided on Friday, AFP reports.
Britain, France and Germany believe Iran has violated a 2015 deal that was supposed to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. They and six other countries voted today against a UN resolution that would have stopped the reimposition of sanctions.
“This travesty is taking place against a backdrop of blatant aggression,” Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani told Al Jazeera, referring to the US and Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June.
According to him, the UN has “missed an opportunity for dialogue.”
