AB Volvo's future

Volvo supplies machinery to controversial mining projects

Vehicle manufacturer AB Volvo has supplied at least 90 construction machines to a controversial mining project in Indonesia. This is reported by DN, which has mapped the machinery deliveries.

The newspaper estimates the order value for the deliveries to the mining project at SEK 300 million.

The machines have been purchased by four contractors who mine nickel in the Weda Bay open pit mine on the island of Halmahera. Mining on the island is controversial because it has led to large amounts of rainforest being cut down. It is also said to pose a risk of "extinction" of the Indonesian indigenous Hongana Manyawa people who have lived isolated on the island.
