Government wins in poor but fast-growing oil nation
The ruling party in Latin American Guyana, the People's Progressive Party (PPP), wins the parliamentary election. This means President Irfaan Ali remains in power for another term, writes Reuters.
The PPP received more than twice as many votes as the runner-up, the newly formed opposition party WIN led by business magnate Azruddin Mohamed. The party was formed just three months ago and its success marks a shift among the challenging parties.
Traditionally, the Alliance for Change (APNU) has been the largest opposition force, but with the success of WIN, APNU is now in third place.
According to AFP, rising living costs were one of the most important issues for voters. Last year, a majority of the population lived in poverty, but an oil boom has given a significant boost to economic growth. Last year it rose by 43.6 percent and the hope is that oil production will reach over one million barrels per day by 2030.
Election observers critical: “Abuse”
Election day in the Latin American country of Guyana was well-organized and fundamental freedoms were respected – but the election campaign had shortcomings. This is what election observers from the EU note, according to AFP.
The ruling People's Progressive Party (PPP) is accused of “abuse of incumbent power”.
“The president and his administration inaugurated a large number of public projects and launched several support programs, where the events were combined with campaign activities,” the preliminary report says.
The election result means that President Irfaan Ali remains in power for another term.
