Political situation in Myanmar
Military rule dressed in civilian clothes expected in Myanmar

Today's election in war-torn Myanmar is being condemned as unfair and staged by the military junta. The largest opposition party has been stopped and politicians such as Aung San Suu Kyi have been thrown in prison, writes The Guardian.

The election is decided in three stages and today is the last. Five years after the military coup, the junta describes the election as free, fair and a return to democracy. This is condemned by Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur for Myanmar.

- The junta expects the world to get tired and hopes that the international community will accept military rule dressed in civilian clothes. Countries must not let that happen.

Snowstorm in the USA
One million Americans are estimated to be without power

The snowstorm that has hit large parts of the United States is causing problems. About 800,000 households are estimated to be without power, which according to Fox News calculations means that more than a million Americans are without power.

The storm is affecting several of the country's southernmost states, where communities are not as prepared for the cold. According to CNN, there is a risk that people will be without heat for several days when temperatures are expected to drop to around minus seven degrees.

The worst situation is in the state of Tennessee, where nearly 280,000 homes are without power after snow-laden trees fell over power lines.

At the same time, CBS News reports that over 10,000 flight departures have been canceled on Sunday. So many departures have not been canceled since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, the channel notes.

Nipah virus spreads in India - nurse in coma

The deadly Nipah virus has spread again in India, several international media outlets report. Five people are suspected of being infected, two of whom are nurses.

– The most likely source of infection is a patient who has previously been admitted to the same hospital. That person is being treated as the main suspect and investigations are underway, an official involved in West Bengal’s Nipah surveillance efforts told the Telegraph.

The patient died before he could be tested. One of the nurses is now said to be in a coma, according to the newspaper Focus. 180 people have been tested for the virus, of which 20 have been quarantined.

The virus is spread by bats and causes flu-like symptoms. In some cases, they can progress to shortness of breath, pneumonia or meningitis, according to The Independent.
