Almost 200 million people have been warned.

Power poles are now broken in half and over 800,000 households are without power.

At least 20 states have declared a state of emergency in the American winter storm.

The snow has taken large parts of the US by storm. The storm is moving over a distance of almost 4,000 kilometers in the southern, central and eastern parts of the country, American media report.

The warnings cover nearly 200 million people and span a record number of districts.

At least 20 states have now declared a state of emergency and more than 10,000 flights to and from the United States have been canceled, writes ABC News.

In New York, schools were canceled on Monday.

“As the snowfall begins to blanket our city, we have decided that tomorrow will be a distance learning day for New York schools to protect everyone from dangerous weather conditions,” writes Mayor Zhoran Mamdani.

The worst amount of snow is expected to fall between St. Louis and Pittsburgh and between New York and Boston. On those routes, up to 30 centimeters are expected, writes the Washington Post.

In New Mexico, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and West Virginia, that amount has already reached the ground, reports Fox Weather.

But it is not just the snow that is causing it. The freezing cold is also affecting the country.

In several places, temperatures were down to -15 degrees Celsius during the morning, US time.

Over 800,000 households are now without power – the worst affected is Tennessee.

Almost 250,000 are without power there. Now even electricity poles have frozen and cracked in the middle of the cold temperature.
