The development in Cuba Fuel shortage halts May Day celebrations in Cuba
Revolution Square in Havana is usually full of May Day celebrants who are bused in, but not this year. Cuba's Communist Party has canceled Monday's festivities due to the extreme fuel shortage in the country, several media reports.
According to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the island receives only two-thirds of its fuel needs because supplier countries, such as Venezuela, fail to fulfill their agreements. For weeks, drivers have been sleeping in their vehicles outside gas stations, writes The Guardian. The queues stretch for many kilometers and last for several days.
